Frankfurt, a central German city on the river Main, is a major financial hub that's home to the European Central Bank. It's the birthplace of famed writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose former home is now the Goethe House Museum. Like much of the city, it was damaged during World War II and later rebuilt. The reconstructed Altstadt (Old Town) is the site of Römerberg, a square that hosts an annual Christmas market.

Royal Castles Tour from Frankfurt: Neuschwanstein Castle and Linderhof Palace

Your full-day tour starts in the morning in central Frankfurt. Board your coach and settle in for your 4.5-hour drive south to the enchanting Bavarian town of Füssen, on the southern tip of the Romantic Road near the Austria border.

Perched on a rocky, forested hill is Neuschwanstein Castle, one of Germany’s most beloved attractions. This stunning fairy tale palace rises steeply above the village of Hohenschwangau, looming over the Alpine foothills. A snapshot of Neuschwanstein from afar explains why this royal castle was used as the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

Learn about the life and reign of the shy and reclusive King Ludwig II, as you admire the distinctive Neo-Gothic Revival architecture and ornate interior, adorned with precious furnishings and paintings from the late 1800s. Continue by coach to Linderhof Palace, roughly an hour away. The smallest of King Ludwig II’s three palaces, Linderhof was inspired by the king’s visits to the Palace of Versailles in France.
